sage: The new governance that’s on its way can’t come soon enough. The Interactive Map found here is very revealing. (Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it to load onto the blog.)

The bloody civil war in Syria is having yet another impact: The nation is now considered one of the most corrupt in the world, according to newly released data from the anti-corruption group Transparency International.
The organization’s annual “Corruption Perceptions Index,” first published in 1995, is one of the most closely watched barometers of the issue. The group surveyed experts on public sector corruption in 177 countries, grading each nation on a scale of zero to 100, with zero being “highly corrupt” and 100 being “very clean.”
Syria has never been considered particularly virtuous, but growing attention to the business dealings of President Bashar al-Assad and his associates helped its score plunge to 17 from 26 in 2012. The country now ranks near the bottom—tied with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan for 168th place. It ranked 144th last year. Read the rest of this entry

sage: Let’s hope that between the two of them they can overturn Netanyahu and his war-mongering ways.
FOX News – December 1, 2013 | Thanks to Golden Age of Gaia.
Israel’s new opposition leader says he told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that a clear majority in Israel supports a peace deal with the Palestinians and that his Labor Party will back any future agreement.
Isaac Herzog was elected Labor leader on Nov. 21, replacing a party chief who had made domestic issues such as economic inequality a chief concern. Herzog’s meeting with Abbas on Sunday signaled a shift back to Labor’s traditional priorities. In the 1990s, Labor led Israel into ultimately unsuccessful negotiations on the terms of a Palestinian state.
Talks resumed in July, but there’s been no apparent progress. Tensions are high over Israel’s continued settlement building on lands sought for a Palestinian state.
Herzog says Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should meet to advance negotiations.
Natural Society – Christina Sarich: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Found to Increase Asthma Risk by up to 540%
By Christina Sarich, Natural Society, http://naturalsociety.com/acetaminophen-tylenol-linked-asthma/
There are numerous causes for asthma, including environmental pollutants, natural airway constrictors like pollen and rag weed, as well as a genetic predisposition. But did you know that research suggests that the rise in asthma cases since the early 1980′s could be due to the use of acetaminophen commonly in products like Tylenol or Advil. Doctors stopped giving children aspirin for fevers and started giving them acetaminophen more commonly at this time. Read the rest of this entry

Today, two industry groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding stating that their members will minimize the impact of onshore oil and gas development in the UK on the country’s water resources. The memorandum accompanies a report released by Water UK. The report concludes that ”where water is in short supply there may not be enough available from public water supplies or the environment to meet the requirements for hydraulic fracturing.”While the aim of the mutual agreement was to give the public greater confidence and reassurance that everything will be done to minimize the effects on water resources and the environment during fracking, some organizations are speaking out against agreement. China has recently rejected a large shipment of corn imported from the United States, due to the discovery of contamination by a strain of unapproved GMO corn.
The offender, Syngenta AG’s Agrisure Viptera corn, also known as MIR 162, has not received approval from the Chinese government in Beijing. This strain is specifically engineered for resistance against certain insects, and is common throughout the United States.
The corn shipment of between 55,000 and 60,000 tonnes was stopped by the Shenzhen quarantine bureau in the southern province of Guangdong after it was already unloaded, and will likely be re-routed to Japan or South Korea. Read the rest of this entry

After this month’s Remembrance Day parade, I repaired to a central London boozer with fellow veterans to stew my brain in ale. Pinned to chests all around me were glinting banks of medals. A statistically improbable number of airborne maroon and commando green berets were on display. Groups of veterans bunched together, slurring war stories. Read the rest of this entry

Northern Texas towns are experiencing an intense string of earthquakes – the last of which was one of the most powerful in 5 years. As unusual tremors have been going on for over 3 weeks now, many suspect fracking might be to blame.
On Thursday, the region experienced two tremors, with one of them registering 3.6 magnitude, 55 km west of the town of Azle at 07:58:36 GMT, as recorded by the US Geological Service, and the other 2.8 at 08:41:07 GMT, with the epicenter not far from the first one. USGS records show that the 3.6 tremor was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in 5 years. “It sounded like a sonic boom, and then the house started shaking,” Keith Krayer, a local resident who felt the effects of the quake, told RT. Krayer said he had no doubt the quake was sparked by fracking. “When they frack, they inject all that water and chemicals into the ground, then they pump it back up and separate the gas from the water, then they have to dispose of that water 13,000 feet down. It causes the plates to slip, the lubrication from the water.”
